Washington State troopers stopped a wrong-way driver on I-5 early on Saturday morning using a spike strip.
The driver was reported just before 4 a.m. on Aug. 13 moving southbound in the northbound lanes near 220th Street Southwest.
Trooper Cliff Roberts followed alongside the vehicle from the southbound lanes, but was unable to get the vehicle driver to stop or realize she was traveling the wrong way. The vehicle continued its southbound journey and entered the express lanes.
Trooper Kyle Yarbrough accessed the express lanes and was able to successfully deploy spike strips near Mercer Street, approximately 17 miles away from where it was first spotted. After running over the spike strips, the vehicle came to a stop. Trooper Roberts pulled in behind the vehicle and ultimately arrested the female driver for DUI. She was subsequently booked into the King County Jail.
The Washington State Patrol would like to remind drivers to maintain awareness and always have an escape route in mind if faced with a wrong-way vehicle.
