With fall almost here, we invite readers to take a few last opportunities to “Show us your dahlias.” Simply submit photos of dahlias from your Edmonds-area yard, so we can publish for all to see and enjoy.
A reminder of how this all started: Local historian Jim Underhill noted that in February 1925, the dahlia was selected as the City of Edmonds official flower. According to “Edmonds, the Gem of Puget Sound,” by Ray Cloud, a contest was held that had the dahlia running against the rose. Citizens voted, and it was a tie between the two floral gems. The Edmonds Floretum Garden Club recommended that the dahlia be selected, and the City Council voted to approve that recommendation.
“And for 30 years, Edmonds had sponsorship for both a dahlia and a rose show in town,” Underhill said. “I assume it was quite a scene, and well-enjoyed by all.”
Two years ago, at Underhill’s suggestion, My Edmonds News began publishing photos of dahlias, submitted by folks growing them at home. “It was a wonderful thing to see such beauty and diversity from this one flower, the dahlia,” Underhill said. This year, My Edmonds News as continued the practice and invites readers to submit their dahlia photos for as long as the flower is in bloom.
Email your photos to myedmondsnews@gmail.com. Include the name of the neighborhood or general area where they were grown and the name of the grower, if you want it to be included.
