Following a search by multiple police agencies, a convicted felon who fled from a stolen car carrying a handgun was captured Sunday afternoon, a few blocks away from Edmonds-Woodway High School.

According to Lynnwood police spokesman Sgt. David Byrd, the suspect — who has a long criminal history — was a passenger in a stolen vehicle that Lynnwood police attempted to stop around 2:20 p.m at 196th Street Southwest and Highway 99.

Following a short pursuit that began in the area of 76th Avenue West and 208th Street Southwest, the stolen car struck another vehicle in Esperance, where 76th Avenue West merges southbound with Highway 99. There were no injuries in the collision, and the vehicle’s driver was arrested immediately, police said.

However, the passenger fled the car, and was seen running away with a handgun. Officers from multiple agencies, including Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mill Creek, Shoreline and the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, along with a K-9 Unit from Monroe, responded to the scene.

After an intensive search, the second suspect was apprehended around 4 p.m. by the Monroe K-9 unit in a greenbelt area in the 8100 block of 213th Street Southwest, between some houses and other property, Byrd said. The suspect was taken to Swedish Edmonds hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained while he was fleeing through the bushes.

The suspect did not have the handgun in his possession when he was captured, and police continued to search the area for the weapon, Byrd said.

Both the driver and passenger are facing multiple felony offenses.
