Members of the world-famous Nordic Fiddlers Bloc (NFB) will give music workshops on Sunday, Oct. 9 at the Cedar Valley Grange in Lynnwood. The trio is comprised of Kevin Henderson, dynamite fiddler from the Shetland Islands, Olav Luskengård Mjelva, respected tradition bearer from Norway, and fiddler Anders Hall from Sweden.
NFB has dazzled audiences in Europe, Australia, Japan and the U.S. with its energetic folk music, arrangements and harmonies. Each musician brings strong musical traditions from his homeland to the group, and when they play together, something marvelous occurs.
Kevin Henderson hails from the Shetland Islands, one of Scotland’s archipelagos, which has one of the richest fiddle traditions in the world. He plays fiddle with several groups, including the legendary Boys of the Lough. Anders Hall plays regular fiddle, hardanger fiddle, and viola, and he’s an expert on both Swedish and Norwegian folk music. Hardanger fiddle, or hardingfele, is a centuries-old Norwegian instrument with drone strings and an unmistakably unique sound. Olav Luskengård Mjelva plays regular fiddle and hardanger fiddle. In 2010, he received the Norwegian equivalent of a Grammy award for his debut solo album, and in 2011, he was awarded the title of Norway’s folk musician of the year.
Sessions are open to musicians from any genre who are comfortable on their instruments and have experience learning by ear. Participants should bring a recording device.
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Participants may choose from six workshops during the day.
Two sessions run concurrently during each of the scheduled time segments. The fee for one workshop is $35 for adults ($25 if under 18), or take a full day of workshops for $60 for adults ($40 if under 18). Call 206-794-0656 for schedule and details.
