Edmonds-Woodway High School students in the Students Saving Salmon Club will be conducting a door-to-door survey on Saturday, Oct. 22 to obtain local knowledge about the salmon in lower Shell Creek. The survey will focus on lower Shell Creek, where salmon are known to occur each year.
Edmonds residents who live beside Shell Creek on Carey Road, Brookmere Drive, Caspers Street, Melody Lane, Giltner Lane, Sater Lane, Aloha Way, Carol Way and 7th Avenue North should expect to see students coming to their door between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Students will survey each resident about their salmon observations, including timing of occurrence, numbers, species, spawning activity and habitat conditions such as any barriers to fish passage. Through contact with streamside residents, students aim to increase stewardship of salmon in the stream, develop an information base of local knowledge on local salmon populations, obtain information needed to begin addressing habitat conditions that may affect successful salmon spawning, and begin assessing fish passage barriers in Shell Creek.
Edmonds residents having observations of salmon in creeks on their property are asked to email Students.Saving.Salmon@gmail.com.
Great news and good luck on this very important element of research. I know that other environmental groups in the WRIA8 boundaries do this important step. Not only is it good for the research, it is also good for educating citizens of their individual impact on our Shell Creek watershed.
