Event co-founders Lars Phillips and JP Osseward began the Dick’s Walkathon in 2011 with just the two of them. Since then it has grown, and this years the pair expected more than 50 participants.
Evan Christie, brother-in-law of event co-founder JP Osseward, and 6-month daughter Tallulah get ready to start the trek.
Veteran Dick’s walker Kevin Drake is famous for his customized T-shirts with check-off boxes for each menu item he plans to eat along the way.
Lars Phillips checks off Kevin Drake’s first meal of the day. “I figured I’d start off strong with a Dick’s Deluxe!” said Drake.
Lars Phillips shows off the “Change for Charities” box. Boxes have been place at all Dick’s locations, and customers are encouraged to fill them in support of local charities that aid the homeless.
Dakota the Golden Retriever seems much more interested in owners Jordan and Melissa Edwards’ burger than walking. The trio came from Bellevue to join the walk.
Jasmine Donovan, grand-daughter of Dick’s founder Dick Spady, shows off this year’s Walkathon T-shirt.
To paraphrase an old saying, the journey of 22 miles begins with a single step, and that step happened at 10:45 am Sunday at the Edmonds Dick’s Drive-in at 220th Street Southwest and Highway 99. That’s when a group of more than 25 walkers set off set off to pound the pavement, eat burgers and raise money for charity. The group will stop at all six Dick’s Drive-ins, ending their trek at around 8 p.m. with soft ice cream sundaes at the Queen Anne Dick’s.
“Last year we raised $2,500 for Seattle-area charities that support the homeless,” said organizer Lars Phillips. “This year, thanks to matching funds pledged by our corporate sponsors, we hope to reach $15,000. Look for the ‘Change for Charity’ box at Dick’s serving windows, say ‘yes’ when your server asks if you’d like to round up your tab, and remember that thanks to our sponsors, every dollar will get matched twice.”
