The Global Affairs Center at Shoreline Community College, directed by Edmonds resident Larry Fuell, will present a free program “Reckoning with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte” on Thursday, Nov. 3, from 7-8:30 p.m. in Room 9208
The speaker will be Dr. Vicente Rafael, University of Washington, Jackson School of International Studies, just back from two months in the Philippines
Since the inauguration of President Duterte on June 30, the Philippines has received much attention in the media –unfortunately, not all of it good. President Duterte’s domestic policy has focused on combating illegal drug trade by initiating a nationwide drug war that resulted in more than 2,000 vigilante murders to date. Now, he says he is cutting off military relations with the U.S., and has welcomed new relations with China.
