The Edmonds-Woodway Warriors were denied a fourth straight trip to the WIAA 3A State Girls Soccer Tournament as they lost in a shootout to the Stanwood Spartans Thursday at Shoreline Stadium.
The Spartans won the shootout 5-3 after the two squads played to a 1-1 draw over 80 minutes of regulation time and an additional 10 minutes of sudden-death overtime in the District 1 3A Girls Soccer Tournament loser-out match.
The Warriors’ spirits were high early on as sophomore Michaela Dayno scored for E-W in the third minute of the match. Dayno got off a quick shot from a crowd of players that got past Stanwood goalkeeper Kaitlin Larson and gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
The Spartans answered 19 minutes later when freshman Shelby Lund launched a 30-yard bomb into the upper left-hand corner of the Warrior goal, tying the match at 1-1.
After the teams went scoreless the rest of the way, the match was decided in a shootout. Stanwood scored on all five of their penalty shot attempts; E-W couldn’t match the Spartans perfection as Danyo, Gabby Chappell and Morgan Davis all converted their penalty shots but Kia Mackey’s attempt slipped wide.
With the loss, the Warriors’ 2016 season ended with an overall record of 11-4-4.
