Prep boys basketball: Mavs fall to Timberwolves in overtime, 54-52

The Jackson Timberwolves scored the only basket in overtime to outlast Meadowdale 54-52 in a non-league game at the Stable Friday night.

Jackson (2-0) was led by Parker Manalo, who scored 23 points. Jordan Brajcich and Brock Peterson each added 7 points for the Timberwolves.

Xavier Meekins paced Meadowdale with 16 points while Mustapha Sonko added 12 points for the Mavericks. Meekins hit three 3-point shots in a row in the third quarter to help the Mavericks get back into the game.

Playing in its season opener, Meadowdale rallied from a 17-3 first half deficit, scoring 20 points in the third quarter — almost matching its total first-half scoring of 20 points.

The Mavericks led several times in the fourth quarter. With the game tied at 50-50, Meekins grabbed a rebound with about 35 seconds left and put in a shot to put his team up by two.

Jackson came back down to tie it at 52-52 with a runner off the glass by Manalo. In overtime, the Mavs went cold, and Timberwolves guard Ian Wilgress scored the only points by either team — hitting a short two-point jumper for the deciding basket in the contest.

“It’s one thing for it to come down to a close game, but to have actually practiced late-game situations really helped us in the end tonight. It helps you in the future definitely to have practiced those situations,” said Jackson Head Coach Steve Johnson after the game.
