Prep wresting: Warriors defeat Seagulls 47-21

Edmonds-Woodway High School came away with a 47-21 victory in the opening dual meet of the season against Everett. Both teams are ranked in the pre season top 20. The Warriors reloading from their 4th place finish in state last year came in with a young team that featured three freshman and only three seniors. It was those three freshmen who set the tone for the night.

After Generous Yeh scored a second round fall at 285 scored a second round fall over Everett’s Jordon Hatem, Freshman Xiawang Phipps took the mat at 106 against Sean Beck. After being dominated by Beck early in the match the young Warrior scored a reversal and pinned his opponent in the second round. In the following matches at 113 and 120 freshmen Ousman Fatty and Howie Hare fought from their backs for three rounds only allowing Everett to score four team points at each weight instead of six. The Warriors ten won seven of the remaining ten weights to seal the victory..

One of the nights exciting matches came at 145 when Warrior Salihou Fatty faced off against Riley Bennett from Everett. In a hard fought battle Fatty was trailing 4-3 when he escaped as time ran out knotting the score at four and forcing overtime. Both wrestlers were on the attack early in OT before Bennett came away with the takedown and victory.

The 170 lb bout featured two ranked grapplers who both competed at state last year. Both had met thee times last year. In a hard fought battle Edmonds Woodway’s Anthony Lindamood scored a 6-2 decision over Brett Allred from Everett.

Edmonds Woodway hosts the twenty team Edmonds Invitational Tournament on Saturday Dec 3 at 9:00 am.
