Scene in Edmonds: A lovely day for sea lions at play

  1. Great shots, Julia. I heard them barking later in the afternoon while I was at the marsh photographing birds.

    1. Thanks Bill,
Apparently they have been hanging out since at least Monday night. This morning (6:30 AM) I can still see a couple just off the Dog Park.

      1. Someone had asked for the reason behind the gathering so we asked Susan Morrow of the Edmonds Seal Sitters organization, and here’s what she said: “Many of the sea lions in the photo were “sailing”, i.e., extending their flippers into the air, which is a cooling off/relaxing behavior. Perhaps there was a nearby food source they were enjoying, or it was a social gathering. In 12 years of Edmonds Seal Sitting, I only had one sea lion come ashore. They don’t haul-out in our town, but maybe there is a secluded sea lion rookery in the area.”

  2. Nice shots. The sea lions look like they are having fun! And thanks for the info from the Edmonds Seal Sitter group.

  3. I read online they only mate on land. So these were sailing and rafting, according to Susan’s feedback. I saw the group north of the jetty this morning, but also heard barking near the marina.
