For more than 20 years, the Edmonds Historical Museum has brought the Edmonds Summer Market to downtown Edmonds. As the years have gone by, it has grown to suit the community that shops there, supporting our local farmers and small businesses. This season, our market hosts about 125 vendors each week, bringing a diverse selection of local crops, meats and hand- crafted items to select and enjoy. This week marks the start of the second half of the Summer Season, with eight more Saturdays to enjoy.
With this in mind, I would like to start this article with a simple thanks to the Edmonds Historical Museum. The volunteers of the Museum join us at the market every week, helping with set up/take down, working the information booth, and doing all the behind the scenes jobs that help make the market such a welcoming place. You will find these volunteers roaming the market, or by the museum in the Information Booth, usually wearing their green apron or volunteer button. If you want to learn more about what is involved in supporting our market, stop by the Information Booth and ask. We are always looking to welcome more members into our market family.
Next, I would like to take a moment to thank our vendors. We are so fortunate to host more than 30 small family farms, which bring us row crops, fruits, flowers, beef, pork and chicken. They represent the soul of our market: working long before the market season starts in the fields, tending their crops and farms, waking early on market morning to pick, and bringing the freshest produce you will find to the Edmonds community. Whether rain or shine, cool or beastly hot, they are there in the fields and at our market, ready to talk to their customers, sharing a farm story or recipe.
So, when you are picking up that tomato, peach or pork chop, take a moment, please, and say “Thank You!” — for without these amazing, hard-working people, we would not have such a fabulous market.
As many of you might have noticed, the Edmonds Summer Market also hosts over 100 small businesses. Each one of our vendors is a small business, where the vendor creates/makes the items they sell. They include jam/salsa makers, wood turners, bakeries, candy creators, jewelers, designers, and so many more unique items I cannot possibly list them all. Personally, as a jam maker, I first ventured into the Edmonds Market about 10 years ago. It was so overwhelming at first, but the kindness of the other vendors and community welcomed me, and now it is like a second home. To all these vendors who come every week, sharing their talent and joy with us, keeping our market vibrant and diverse, Thank you!
And finally, thank you Edmonds. All of you who come down every Saturday to pick up a treat, salad fixings or something to barbecue, to enjoy a meal, or simply to be inspired to purchase a special something for yourself or a friend — you keep our market going strong. It is the welcome feeling we receive from you every week when we pop up our tents and spend the day with you that keeps us coming back, week after week, and year after year. So, join us this week and for the next seven Saturdays after that. And remember, because we love our dogs, please leave them at home.
