Edmonds Healthy Beauty and Skin Care: New Year’s skin solutions

Denice Schwind

As everyone rings in the New Year with resolutions, I encourage you to start the year off right with skin solutions! Every year around this time, people have an “out with the old, in with the new” mentality, so this year, apply that mentality to your skin care regimen. Your skin care routine should be evolving as your skin changes. This is a great time of year to go in to see your Dermatologist to assess your skin’s health, discuss any concerns that you may have, and determine a treatment plan to include product recommendations to keep your skin looking healthy and radiant.

When you see your dermatologist, be sure that you make the most of your time by coming prepared. Here are some tips on how to get the most out of your visit:

Make a list: In the weeks leading up to your appointment, write down questions that you may have for your dermatologist. This way, you won’t forget anything during your visit. Odds are, if you forget to mention something, you will put it off until your next yearly visit.

Bring your products: It is easy to get stuck in a skin care product rut. Your dermatologist can let you know if you are using the appropriate products for your skin and make recommendations if necessary. Don’t forget to bring in your sunscreen to ensure that you are using a SPF that provides broad spectrum protection.

Know your history: Your genetics dictate much of how your skin ages, handles sun exposure, and responds to treatments. By knowing your history, you will be able to help your dermatologist determine the best treatment plan for you.

Check yourself: Have your dermatologist teach you how to do a skin exam at home so that you know what to keep an eye out for. Since most people go to the dermatologist once a year, it is important that you are aware of how your skin changes over time. This is the best way to spot skin cancers early.

It is recommended to visit your dermatologist once a year, and more frequently if you have a family or personal history of skin cancer. Make sure to use your dermatologist as a resource for medical concerns to cosmetic treatments. They will be able to answer any questions that you may have, or refer you to someone who can. So, start the year off right by making an appointment to see your dermatologist, ensuring that you start the New Year off with healthy skin and put your best face forward.
