Former Lynnwood Safeway to be divided, Trader Joe’s to take one space

Construction work is now underway at the former Safeway location on the east side of Highway 99 at 196th Street Southwest.

The work involves dividing and renovating the space, according to Lynnwood community development director Paul Krauss. The store will be locating from its current space in James Village.

“The only tenant we officially know about as of now is a relocated and enlarged Trader Joe’s,” he said.

There is no set timeline for completion of the project at this point.

  1. I will be glad to see better parking but that area is sure seedy. A lot of crime in that area. Needs better policing. It will be better than where it is, I hope the beggars won’t come with them.

    1. I knew a guy named Matthew that played banjo out front of there. Great guy, but I think there was a little bit a turf war at Trader Joe’s that drove him a away. Another performer told me, when I mentioned I hadn’t seen Matthew in a while, that even the poorer folks who are trying to get a nut are feeling the pressure from aggressive transplants.

    1. We did ask City of Lynnwood officials about this recently. We’re told Trader Joe’s is hoping to get final inspections and open in the new location by the end of the year
