School staff spread joy of reading in Edmonds

Teachers, school kids and parents were out in force in downtown Edmonds Saturday for annual Read Across America festivities sponsored by the Edmonds Education Association and the Foundation for Edmonds School District.

The National Education Association created Read Across America 21 years ago to celebrate reading. Occurring every year near the birthday of Dr. Seuss, the day is focused on encouraging families to read together. For the past six years, the event has been promoted locally to raise funds for Edmonds School District libraries.

One of the highlights each year is the appearance of guest readers — featuring staff from schools across the district — who share their favorite books at Edmonds’ Revelations Yogurt.

Because the Edmonds School provides only a small budget for library book purchases, school libraries rely on parent groups, private grants and Read Across America to provide them with the majority of their funding to purchase new books.

Community members who would like to donate to school libraries can make checks payable to the Foundation for Edmonds School District, earmarked for Read Across America, and mail them to the Foundation for Edmonds School District, P.O. Box 390, Lynnwood, WA 98046.
