Having already secured the Wesco 3A South championship, the Meadowdale Mavericks baseball team came into Monday afternoon’s game with Lynnwood looking to do some fine tuning to stay sharp heading into the District playoffs later this week. The Royals were still playing for seeding in the district play-in games. The two teams played a closely contested game that entered the bottom of the seventh inning, when Meadowdale scored the winning run.
The game had been tied at one run a piece. After the deciding run, the game ended with a 2-1 victory for the Mavs.
After two scoreless innings to begin the game, Nick Holmes led off the top of the third for Lynnwood and drew a walk. Riley Eres then grounded out to third for the first out and moved Holmes to second. Gabe Newson followed that with a sharp single up the middle to drive home Holmes for the first run of the game.
Meadowdale evened things up an inning later.
Catcher Travis Hagan, a Seattle University commit, got things started in the fourth inning when he ripped a shot down the line right over the bag for a double. Mason Vaughn, who had come in to pinch run for Hagan, scored two hitters later, on a single by Anthony Toyne.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the seventh inning. Leading off the inning for the Mavericks, Mason Kim hit a hard grounder towards Royals shortstop, Gabe Newson, who bobbled the ball and allowed Kim to reach base safely.
Kim advanced to second on the first pitch to the next batter. It was dropped by the catcher for a passed ball.
Mason Vaughn, looking to sacrifice, squared to bunt on the following pitch pushing it down the third base line. The play was fielded by the third baseman who threw to first. The first baseman failed to catch it cleanly.
Kim, who had been running from second on the bunt, didn’t break stride rounding third and slid head first with the winning score.
“We teach our kids to be aggressive on the base paths,” said head coach Bill Hummel after the game. “We want to think two bases all the time. The whole deal is, if they can’t play catch, they have to pay. That’s not the first time that’s happened for us this year. We’ll see it often, on a routine ground ball, to the infield with a runner at second, and coach (Allen) Paves does a great job pushing them home. If they bobble it over there, like they did today, we have a great chance to score.”
He went on to talk about the game. “Exciting game, it really was,” he said. “They (Lynnwood) certainly had something to play for. If things broke right for them, they could end up with the three seed. So they threw their best arm, Latimer, he was terrific. I was real impressed with him.”
The game also marked Senior Night for the nine Mavericks seniors on the team: Mason Kim, Will Schafer, Johnny Kier, Tommy Dimmock, Aaron Chester, Travis Hagan, Andrew Mitchell, Anthony Toyne and Nate Monillas.
The two teams will face each other again Tuesday afternoon, May 1 in the last regular season game for both. The game will start at 4 p.m at Lynnwood High School.
