St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Edmonds will be live-streaming the visit of Bishop Michael Curry when he celebrates Evensong at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle on Thursday, June 14 at 7 p.m.
Bishop Curry, who is the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church of the United States, has become well-known because of the stirring sermon he gave at the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Megan Markle at Windsor Castle in England on May 19.
The American bishop’s 14-minute, passionate address entitled The Power of Love was the most tweeted-about moment of the day of the royal wedding, according to Twitter.
The preacher’s energetic speech at the service in St George’s Chapel in Windsor began by quoting civil rights activist and devout Christian Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
An ardent campaigner for social justice, particularly on immigration and same-sex marriage, the Chicago-born Curry is himself a descendant of slaves. He enthusiastically shared his passionate message of the social and political power of love with those gathered at Windsor for the wedding and watching the event worldwide.
The celebration tha Curry will be conducting at St. Marks, Evensong, is also known as Evening Prayer. It is a liturgy used in Episcopal churches and is usually celebrated in the late afternoon or evening. It is commonly known as Evensong when the office is rendered chorally, that is, when most of the service is sung. It is roughly the equivalent of Vespers in the Roman Catholic Church and in Lutheran churches.
The viewing event is open to everyone. St. Alban’s is located at 21405 82nd Pl. W. in Edmonds. For more information, the church can be contacted at 425-778-0371.
