Edmonds’ first business certified in the statewide EnviroStars program, Walnut Street Coffee, will be the location of an EnviroStars business meet-up Monday, July 9. at 5:30 p.m.

Located at 410 Walnut St. and owned by Pam Stuller, Walnut Street is counted among the program’s first 100 businesses recognized since the program’s statewide launch last fall.

To receive EnviroStars recognition, businesses must follow a set of best practices for saving energy and water, reducing waste and pollution, choosing safer products and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

“EnviroStars was created to provide Washington businesses with a single, trusted resource for environmental assistance,” said Jenna McInnis, EnviroStars Steering Committee chair.  “The fact that we’ve already recognized 100 organizations and have more than 260 in the program pipeline, shows that we’re providing businesses with tangible benefits and giving consumers a way to find and support companies that share their values.”

Led by a coalition of 21 Washington cities, counties and utilities, including Edmonds and Snohomish County, EnviroStars features a central web portal that links businesses to local environmental assistance and incentive programs and rewards them for the environmental actions they take.

“When we opened, it was shocking to see how much trash our coffee shop created,” Stuller said. “We filled a commercial dumpster each week. So early on in our business, we committed to reducing our footprint in as many ways as possible.”

Stuller added that Walnut Street was “excited to participate in EnviroStars and stand beside a diverse range of businesses that all go the extra mile to lessen their impact on the environment.”

The July 9 program will include a short presentation about the EnviroStars program, with brief remarks from Stuller about her experience with the program. But mainly the event will be an opportunity for local business owners to meet each other and learn about the EnviroStars program and how they can become involved.

Business owners who want to join the EnviroStars program can learn more about the benefits from participating businesses in the EnviroStars video.
