Edmonds-Woodway High School students were out this weekend looking for salmon in Shell Creek. The Students Saving Salmon club hopes to document when coho and chum salmon arrive, how many occur through the season, and what stretches of Shell Creek the different species of salmon are utilizing.
According to club advisor Joe Scordino, streamside residents advised students that they had yet to see salmon in the creek, with expectations they’ll see them after Halloween. Students too didn’t see any salmon in the creek, but did find one recently dead salmon on the shore of the creek. The dead salmon was determined by students to be a small, male coho salmon.
Students will be conducting periodic surveys through December, and are asking the public to let them know when salmon are sighted by emailing [email protected].
