Over 20 matches this season, the Gig Harbor Tides girls soccer team was rarely tested, winning all 20 by a combined score of 94-6.
On Saturday, the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors finally gave the Tides a real challenge, but it will be little consolation for an E-W squad that had been hoping for more.
The Warriors surrendered two leads, gave up two late goals and ultimately fell to Gig Harbor via penalty kicks in a WIAA 3A Girls Soccer Tournament quarterfinal match played at Peninsula High School in Purdy.
The match ended 3-3 after the full 80 minutes and two overtime periods, sending the Warriors and Tides to a round of penalty kicks; Gig Harbor converted all five of their chances while E-W scored on only three of four attempts, giving the Tides the match victory.
The loss was heartbreaking for the Warriors, who led 1-0 after a goal in the 13th minute by junior Dara Stotland and later 2-1 following a score by junior Kyra Hicks in the 57th minute.
The Tides were able to knot up the game after each E-W lead, then take a 3-2 lead during second-half extra time with a goal by Alyssa Gray, her second score of the match. But the Warriors weren’t done, tying the match at 3-3 off a second goal by Hicks before extra time expired.
Neither team could come up with a winning goal in either of the two overtimes, sending the match to the penalty kicks round where Gig Harbor prevailed.
With the win, Gig Harbor moves on to the 3A state tourney semifinals where they will face Kamiakin. For Edmonds-Woodway, the loss ends a remarkable season; the team finished the year with a record of 18-3-0.
