Edmonds-Woodway High School on Friday had three winners in the 52nd annual Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, hosted by the University of Idaho’s Lionel Hampton School of Music.
Led by EWHS Music Directors Jake Bergevin and Charlotte Reese, the winners were:
EWHS combo 1 – outstanding rhythm section
Malachi Espinola (piano), Jai Lasker (guitar), Rylan Fischer (bass), EJ Brannan (drums) and Natalie Whitlock (alto sax)
Rendezvous vocal quartet – outstanding vocal combo
Dominic Nye, Mwangi Payton, Unathi Machyo and Julia Kim with Malachi Espinola (piano), Jai Lasker (guitar), Rylan Fischer (bass) and EJ Brannan (drums)
Julia Kim – outstanding alto vocalist
More than 130 schools and approximately 4,000 students are taking part in the 52nd Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, which runs through Saturday, Feb. 23.
The festival features three days of student competitions and workshops taught by U of I faculty and staff, as well as jazz musicians and educators.
