Warriors basketball: Boys end season with loss to Shorecrest; girls lose to Arlington

Friday brought district tournament losses for both the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors’ boys and girls basketball teams.

The Edmonds-Woodway boys squad saw their season end on Friday with a 52-40 setback to the Shorecrest Scots in a District 1 3A Boys Basketball Tournament loser-out game played at Edmonds-Woodway High School.

While holding the Scots to just two first-quarter points, E-W couldn’t overcome a crushing 22-10 advantage that Shorecrest enjoyed in the second quarter and then a Scots’ fourth quarter push that sealed the victory.

Mutdung Bol led Edmonds-Woodway with 19 points in the contest, but no other Warriors could muster double-figures in the scoring.

Calvin Acker and Antonio Stillwell paced the Scots with 13 and 11 points respectively; teammate Elijah Johnson added 10 points in the win.

The loss to No. 9 tournament-seed Shorecrest, in addition to the blow dealt to the Warriors the night before by Stanwood, eliminates E-W from the district tourney and closes the book on their 2018-2019 season. The Warriors end their campaign with an overall record of 12-9.

The Lady Warriors also stumbled on Friday, losing to the Arlington Eagles 55-38 in a District 1 3A Girls Basketball Tournament semi-final game at Arlington High School.

E-W led the tournament’s No. 1-seed 26-20 at halftime but collapsed offensively in the second half, scoring just 12 points — three in the third quarter — and watched as the Eagles lit up the scoreboard with 35 second-half points.

The E-W girls, seeded No. 5 in their district tourney, are still alive in their postseason run and can earn a berth to the regional round of the 3A state tournament with a win on Saturday, Feb. 16. The Lady Warriors will match up against the Ferndale Golden Eagles in a winner-to-regionals loser-out game to be played at Everett Community College starting at 11 a.m.

The Edmonds-Woodway vs. Ferndale girls tourney contest is the first of six postseason 3A tournament games on Saturday at Everett CC.
