Draw every day for a year? It’s happening now at ARTspot

What would motivate you to do a drawing every day for a year?

Local Edmonds art store, ARTspot has motivated over 40 local artists to do just that. The ARTspot 2019 Challenge to Draw-Every-Day For A Year.

Anne Ryan was one of the first ARTspot regulars to sign up for this challenge “While I haven’t achieved 100-percent drawing every day yet, this Draw-Every-Day Challenge has definitely helped me draw more often,” she said. “I probably draw four or five days out of the week, sometimes a little more and sometimes a bit less. Having the sketchbook on the table next to me is an easy reminder each evening to take this time for me.”

When ARTspot opened in 2012, owners Tracy Felix and Denise Cole wanted to create more than an art supply store. They wanted a place that would become a hub for the vibrant art community here in Edmonds Washington. Six years later, ARTspot’s vision now provides both a carefully curated selection of art supplies, and support for the south Snohomish County artists that live, work and shop here.

Pretty early on, ARTspot started offering “Challenges.”  Artists at all levels have taken on painting and drawing challenges that have yielded amazing results, according to Tracy Felix. Hundreds of Inktober drawings fill the front windows every October. Artists have created 30 paintings in a month, made and donated paintings for local causes and even layered thirty paintings over a single canvas.

This year, ARTspot staff decided to up the game to a full year challenge. The 2019 ARTspot Draw-Every-Day Challenge offers a year’s worth of art supplies, drawing events, free demos and a continuous discount at the store. Like all ARTspot Challenges, this one will culminate in a party with show-and-tell for the artists and their friends and families. “The party always validates and inspires the artists along with all who come to see what they have achieved,” Felix explained.

ARTspot Manager Deana Glenn shows off the window display of the drawing kits every artist receives when they sign up for the challenge.

Store Manager Deana Glenn is excited to see this challenge taking off, stating “Artists started signing up immediately in January, as it is that time of year we see many people making new year’s resolutions to get back in touch with their creativity,” she said. “As of last week, we still have people joining in! We welcome artists at any level.”

Throughout the year, you may see groups out drawing the many picturesque sights in Edmonds. Draw-Every-Day Challenge artists will be treated to three separate, full-day plein air (outdoor) drawing workshops. Ron Stocke, Cole Gallery artist and instructor, and a nationally known artist and author, is kicking off the drawing events on March 30. Other sessions are headed up by ARTspot staffer and instructor Julia Carpenter and Felix, who in addition to being ARTspot co-owner is an instructor and fine artist.

Montana Summers, another of the ARTspot Draw-Every-Day Artists, sums it up: “As a true beginner in drawing/sketching, this was a perfect opportunity to motivate me to put pencil to paper with my sights on getting past the newbie sketcher’s scare of ‘successlessness.’ Another motivating factor was after taking a few introductory workshops in drawing, watercolor, and pastels, I realized starting with a good drawing is imperative.”

It’s still early enough in the year to step up to this challenge,

  1. You’ll see many of these artists in downtown Edmonds Saturday (March 30) sketching away! We’ll be out from around 12:30-3:00 in the vicinity of 5th and Main.
