The Edmonds Chamber of Commerce this week announced a $1,500 pledge of support from Jeff and Erika Barnett of the Salish Sea Brewing Company toward the annual July 4th Beat Brackett 5K race.

“We hope the support of Salish Sea Brewing Company serves to encourage others to support this annual tradition in our community.” said Greg Urban, President and CEO of the Edmonds Chamber of Commerce. “Many people in the community don’t realize that the 4th of July celebration is privately funded by the Edmonds Chamber and Edmonds Chamber Foundation. No tax dollars are used, it is due to our business owners and private donations that we have the Beat Brackett 5K, fireworks and parades each year in Edmonds”.

Named after Edmonds founder George Brackett, the Beat Brackett 5K race is electronically timed using RFID chips on each runner to provide accurate and quick results that will be posted online in real time. Runners can run in their own shirt or in the official 2019 Beat Brackett 5K shirt. George Brackett-inspired “fake” beards are available for runners to don during the race. There is also a competition for the best “Fourth Themed” runner, so get patriotic and you might win.

In addition to trying to win your age bracket, runners will attempt to “Beat ol’ man Brackett”.  One special runner is designated as George Brackett and your goal is to beat him to the finish line.  Those who beat Brackett to the finish line get a wristband that proudly proclaims that “I Beat Brackett 2019”.

Attracting over 700 participants, the “Beat Brackett 5K” is the perfect kick-off to a full day of 4th of July festivities taking place in the heart of historic downtown Edmonds.  For those with a competitive streak, an awards ceremony with metals will be held immediately following the race.

The “Beat Brackett 5K” will take place on Thursday, July 4 and starts in Edmonds City Park at 3rd Ave. S & Pine St. Registration opens at 7:30 am and the race starts at 9 am.  All participants are asked to arrive before 8:30 am to pick up their race bib and materials. There is a $30 registration fee, which includes a race shirt or $25 without a shirt. Day of event registration is available for the $30 but shirts are not guaranteed.
