The Edmonds-Woodway High School boys soccer team knows their recent history; the Warriors closed out both the 2018 and 2017 regular-season campaigns with less-than-satisfactory 0-2 records. This year’s E-W squad is determined to turn that history around.
Motivated to win down the stretch — and get back into 3A state playoffs — the Warriors earned a strong 2-0 victory over the Shorewood Thunderbirds on Wednesday in their next-to-last contest of the 2019 regular season.
E-W won the match with a dominating second-half performance. Both Warrior goals came after halftime — Sebastian Olson with a nifty touch on a ball crossed into the box by Ryan Hanby in the 46th minute, and Hanby with a powerful strike off the rebound of a saved penalty kick he took in the 78th minute.
Olson explained the teams’ spirited play against the T-Birds as the result of a reminder given by E-W Coach Mike Ochoa at halftime.
“What we talked about is if we even want a chance to go to state, we just need to start working harder in these last couple of games,” Olson said. “The last couple of years we’ve fallen short … and this year we really want to go to state. That’s our goal.”
The coach’s nudge worked as the Warriors were clearly the better team after the halftime break.
E-W outshot the T-Birds 10 to three, earned one corner kick to none for Shorewood, and barely missed two more goals during the second half of play. In the 59th minute, Olson bounced a free kick from 22 yards out off the goal to deny a score. Then a minute later, the junior had a penalty kick opportunity stopped by Shorewood goalkeeper Karsten Nye, who saved a follow-up blast from the Warriors’ Omar Padilla on the rebound.
Already ahead of the history from the past two seasons, the Warriors now want to add a win to their total in their final match before the postseason; E-W will face the Mountlake Terrace Hawks on Tuesday, April 30, at Edmonds Stadium in the 2019 regular season finale.
“We’re hoping for a good result to close out the season.” Olson said.
In other E-W sports on Tuesday, the Warriors baseball, softball and boys golf teams all picked up wins.
