Prep baseball: Warriors defeat Royals in 3A District 1 tourney

Though sporting a 12-8 regular season record, the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors looked every bit the No. 1 District 1 3A Baseball Tournament seed that they are on Saturday by crushing the visiting Lynnwood Royals 15-2 at Edmonds-Woodway High School.

The Warriors pounded out 11 hits — six of which were doubles — and took advantage of six Lynnwood errors to take the mercy-rule-shortened victory.

Senior Tommy Oda led the E-W hit parade by going 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI’s. Teammate Hayden Mitchell had a double and four RBI’s in the win.

With the victory, the Warriors move into the semifinal round of the district tourney and will face the Everett Seagulls on Tuesday, May 7, at Everett Memorial Stadium; first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Despite the loss, Lynnwood — the No. 9 seed in the tournament — can still qualify for the WIAA 3A state baseball tourney, but will have to win two straight district tournament loser-out games to do so starting with a May 7 matchup with the No. 5-seeded Meadowdale Mavericks. The Royals-Mavs contest will take place at Meadowdale High School starting at 4 p.m.
