Already with a berth to state firmly secured, the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors finished their play in the District 1 3A Baseball Tournament on Saturday with a 14-2 loss to the Arlington Eagles in the tourney’s 3th/4th place game played at Everett Memorial Stadium.
With the loss, the Warriors place fourth at districts, good enough to qualify for the WIAA State 3A Baseball Tournament that begins on Saturday, May 18.
Saturday’s district consolation final pitted the No. 1- and No. 2- seeded teams in the tourney after both the No. 1-seeded Warriors and the Eagles had loss earlier round games. For Arlington, the Eagles’ 3-2 loss to eventual district tournament runner-up Shorewood on May 7 has been the team’s sole defeat this season.
Arlington showed up on Saturday with a determination not to lose again in the district tourney.
The Eagles pounded E-W pitchers Tommy Oda, Trevor Pastega and Logan Kruse for 16 hits in the mercy-rule shortened contest. Andrew Smith led the Arlington bats by going 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored; Paul Chung had three hits in three at-bats with three RBIs in the win.
The Warriors scored their only runs Saturday in the first inning courtesy of a two-run home run by junior Thomas Blahous; Read Carr, who had singled earlier in the first, scored in front of Blahous. But then, with the exception of a Karsen Tjarneberg single, the E-W bats went silent, allowing Arlington to cruise to the easy victory.
Edmonds-Woodway will now set their sights on the single-elimination 3A state tournament, beginning with a first-round matchup against the Mountain View Mighty Thunder on Saturday; first pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue.
If the Warriors prevail over Mountain View, the team will play again on Saturday at 4 p.m. against the winner of the Capital vs. Mercer Island matchup that takes place at 1 p.m. at Bannerwood.
The Warriors are returning to the 3A state tournament for the third straight year, finishing fourth in each of their last two trips to state. The Edmonds-Woodway vs. Mountain View matchup is a first-round rematch between the two teams; the Warriors and Thunder met in the 2017 round of 16, with E-W coming out on top 3-1.
If E-W wins both its games on Saturday, the team will travel to Pasco for the final weekend of the 3A tourney with games on both Friday and Saturday, May 24 and 25.
