After a heartbreaking loss in their opening game of the District 1 3A Softball Tournament on Tuesday, the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors bounced back in their nightcap and have earned a one-game chance at qualifying for the 3A state tournament later this month.
The Warriors defeated the Arlington Eagles 15-3 in a loser-out game at Phil Johnson Fields in Everett and will take on the Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks in a winner-to-state loser-out game on Thursday. First pitch back at Phil Johnson Fields will be at 4:30 p.m.
E-W pounded out 13 hits in the win over the Eagles, including a two-run home run in the fourth inning by Morgan Sweet; the homer was the first ever for the senior.
The Warriors, the No. 7 seed in the district tourney, took advantage of five Arlington errors to run away with the mercy-rule shortened victory.
The win over No. 6-seeded Arlington came after the Warriors had scared No. 2-seeded Snohomish in an opening-round contest in the tournament. E-W held a 6-3 advantage going into the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Panthers scored three in the frame to tie the score at 6-6 heading to the seventh.
After the Warriors went down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh inning, Snohomish’s Sydney Sandifer hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the frame to give the Panthers the come-from-behind 7-6 walkoff victory.
The Warriors will likely bring a load of confidence into their Thursday winner-to-state clash with No. 5-seed Marysville-Pilchuck. E-W has won seven of their last 10 games, including an 11-4 victory over the Tomahawks on May 7.
The winner of the Warriors-Tomahawks contest will not only punch their ticket to state, but will play again on Thursday against the winner of the Marysville-Getchell – Everett game for third place in the district tournament.
