In February 2019, four members of the Edmonds Rotary Club set out to find a site in rural Gambia for a science lab. What in the world would prompt such an arduous journey? The club’s International Service Committee Chair, Lamin Manneh, happens to be a native of Gambia. After a visit to a school in Kenya the previous June, Committee Co-Chair Maggie Peterson and Manneh started collaborating on a literacy project in The Gambia, with an eye on the real need in the area for “pure” science.

A “Bridge to Success” project committee, which included club members Manneh, Peterson, Beth W. Kealy and Randy Hutchins, wrote and acquired a Rotary district grant, held five days of meetings with local government officials, spent three days in “the bush” in rural Gambia, and made nine school site visits. The committee discovered a perfect site for this science lab in the village of Niani in Wassu, on the Northern Bank of the Gambia River in Western Gambia.

The public is invited to come and hear about the project itself, the road to discovery and future plans for the “Bridge to Success” in rural Gambia.
