After weeks of preparation, the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors hit the gridiron on Friday with senior quarterback Read Carr ready to lead the offense. Little did Carr and his teammates know that a Plan B would have to quickly be put into place.
Carr injured his left wrist on the first offensive play from scrimmage and had to leave the game for treatment. The senior never returned and the remaining Warriors went on to suffer a 35-14 loss against the visiting Glacier Peak Grizzlies in the 2019 season opener played at Edmonds Stadium.
The Grizzlies built a 14-0 early lead while E-W scrambled to get refocused, with junior Cruze Colwill taking over the quarterbacking duties. Despite being pressed into duty, Colwill finishing with 65 yards passing (7 for 13) and a rushing touchdown, but it wouldn’t be enough to get past GP.
Alec Rust accounted for the only other E-W touchdown with a late-game 17-yard TD run.
Glacier Peak junior quarterback Tyson Lang led the Grizzlies by completing 14 of 23 pass attempts for 178 yards and three touchdowns; Lang also found the end zone with a 20-yard TD run to cap off GP’s opening drive of the contest.
The Warriors will travel to Shoreline Stadium for their next game, a 7 p.m. matchup against the Shorecrest Scots on Friday, Sept. 13.
