Receive free training by Coast Guard Auxiliary instructors during a series of three Safe Boating seminars, starting Tuesday, Nov. 5. It’s a chance to reinforce your safe boating practices and learn new skills on how to navigate local waters.
Co-sponsored by the Port of Edmonds, the Edmonds Yacht Club and the Coast Guard Auxiliary, these seminars will benefit experienced boaters, novice boaters, those who enjoy small watercraft (such as kayaks and windsurfers), and the general public.
The first seminar Nov. 5 will cover safety and “rules of the road.” Discussions will include topics outside of the boating safety guides, such as how to keep from swamping small boats and watercraft while approaching the marina during busy times and how to share the waterways. Also the group will share navigating tips to avoid the Edmonds ferry, dive park, and beaches, and how to stay safe within the vessel traffic lanes.
Topics for the Feb. 4, 2020 seminar will include sharing local knowledge on docking within the Edmonds Marina, line handling and the use of correct knots, and dealing with common local weather and tide conditions.
On April 7, 2020, the topic will be communications, including the proper use of the radio, border crossings, trip planning, and the importance of charts.
The one-hour seminars, from 7-8 p.m., will be held at the Edmonds Yacht Club, 326 Admiral Way, Edmonds. No RSVP is required. Bring your questions, experiences, first mate, crew and boating friends.

First rule is leave the booze in the cooler until the dock lines are knotted to the pier and then you won’t have to use your communications to call the Coast Guard who will tell you to call Vessel Assist and pony up big $$$’s.
