With paving and the majority of the striping on Dayton Street complete between 3rd Avenue and 5th Avenue, Phase 1 of the Dayton Street Utility Replacement Project is wrapping up, the City of Edmonds says.
Since May 2019, crews have been working to replace the aging and undersized utilities along Dayton Street between 3rd Avenue and 5th Avenue. Replacing these utilities involved adding stormwater pipe capacity to reduce flooding downtown during heavy rainstorms, replacing and upsizing sewer and potable water pipes that are nearing the end of their lifespan, and repaving and restoring Dayton Street after utility replacement.
The city says you may see crews working over the next several weeks to complete final punch list items, including low-impact sidewalk and landscape restoration, installation of permanent crosswalk thermoplastic striping and raised pavement markers in the centerline of Dayton. The majority of this work is not expected to result in any traffic impacts, with the remainder being minor and not requiring road closures.
Phase 2 of the Dayton Street Utility Improvements Project (Dayton Street from 5th Avenue South to 9th Avenue South) is expected to begin in early March 2020 and last through fall 2020. This work will include:
* Adding stormwater pipe capacity to reduce flooding downtown during heavy rainstorms.
* Replacing sewer and potable water pipes that are nearing the end of their lifespan.
* Repaving the 5th Avenue and Dayton Street intersection and concrete crosswalks.
* Upgrading curb ramps to be ADA-accessible at the intersections of Dayton Street and 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th Avenues.
* Adding a sidewalk along the south side of Dayton Street from 7th Avenue to 8th Avenue, where there currently is no sidewalk.
In preparation for Phase 2, limited low-impact work will occur on Dayton between 7th and 9th as soon as late November 2019 to aid and prepare the site for the next phase of construction. The city will follow up with more information as this work is scheduled.
Community Transit Routes 116, 130, and 416 have returned to their regular routes along Dayton Street between 2nd and 5th Avenues. These routes will likely reroute off Dayton Street during Phase 2 construction. We will continue to send updates on alternative routes as they are determined.
