Prep boys tennis: Edmonds-Woodway sending singles player, doubles team to state next spring

Edmonds-Woodway will be sending one singles player and a doubles team to the state championships next spring after their strong outings at the District 1 3A Boys Tennis Tournament that was completed in Arlington on Wednesday.

The Warriors’ Sebastian Fernandez placed second in the singles’ competition at the district tourney; Fernandez fell to Lynnwood’s Nicolas Desgrippes in the district singles’ title match  6-4, 2-6, 6-4, but the runner-up finish was good enough to earn a berth to state.

The E-W doubles’ team of Russell Anderson and Zach Foreman will also be going to state next spring after a consolation round win over Everett’s Aaron Robertson and Grant Mueller on Wednesday; Anderson and Foreman defeated Robertson and Mueller 7-6(7), 5-7, 7-5.

The state championships will be held in Kennewick on May 29-30, 2020.

— Sebastian Fernandez (Edmonds-Woodway) defeated Macen Strickland (Snohomish) 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals; defeated Thomas Synott (Squalicum) 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals; Nicolas Desgrippes (Lynnwood) defeated Sebastian Fernandez (Edmonds-Woodway) 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the finals (Fernandez qualified for the WIAA 3A State Boys Tennis Championships, May 29-30, 2020, in Kennewick)

Doubles (Edmonds-Woodway results):

— Shintaro Wilcox / Preston Pierce (Stanwood) defeated Russell Anderson / Zach Foreman (Edmonds-Woodway) 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 in the quarterfinals; Russell Anderson / Zach Foreman (Edmonds-Woodway) defeated Micah Franklin / Nick Krantz (Oak Harbor) 6-2, 6-3 in the loser-out consolations; Russell Anderson / Zach Foreman (Edmonds-Woodway) defeated Aaron Robertson / Grant Mueller (Everett) 7-6(7), 5-7, 7-5 in the loser-out consolation semifinals (Anderson / Foreman qualified for the WIAA 3A State Boys Tennis Championships, May 29-30, 2020, in Kennewick)
