The Meadowdale Mavericks jumped out to a 13-0 halftime lead, then held on to defeat the visiting Shorecrest Scots 20-14 in a Wesco League South Conference showdown — and also Meadowdale’s homecoming — played Friday at Edmonds Stadium.
Both teams had entered the game with 3-1 league records and were part of a four-team logjam at the top of the league’s South Conference standings.
The Mavs scored a pair of second-quarter touchdowns to grab their early lead. Sophomore Saul Hernandez opened the scoring with a 1-yard TD run less than a minute into the quarter; later, quarterback Hunter Moen connected with Mason Vaughn for a 20-yard TD pass.
While the offense was scoring, the Meadowdale defense was stopping a potent Scots attack. Shorecrest had averaged 39 points in their past two games but was shutout in the first half of Friday’s contest.
Meadowdale scored late in the third quarter on a 47-yard touchdown pass from Moen to Vaughn. The Scots picked up two touchdowns of their own in the second half, but it wouldn’t be enough to topple the Mavs.
With the victory, Meadowdale improved its league mark to 4-1 and are tied for first place in the Wesco League South Conference with Edmonds-Woodway and Snohomish. The Mavs will face the Panthers in their regular season finale on Friday, Oct. 25. Kickoff for the Mavs-Panthers contest is set for 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Snohomish.
