Sponsor spotlight: Polish your complexion with a microdermabrasion facial at Ombu

With all the facial trends there are out there right now, it’s easy to see why you might get confused. But if you are ready for a glowing, polished complexion you should try a microdermabrasion facial!

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive procedure in which a stream of fine crystals or diamond-tipped wand is used to gently buff the skin, exfoliating and removing the superficial layer of dry, dead skin cells. A vacuum then sucks up the exfoliated skin cells.

At Ombu Salon + Spa, your esthetician will first thoroughly cleanse your skin to remove makeup, then apply a diamond-tipped wand in sweeping strokes. It will feel a bit like highly dulled sandpaper, but shouldn’t be painful.

Why should you get a microdermabrasion facial?

Microdermabrasion renews overall skin tone and texture by stimulating blood flow, which improves cell production. People with fine lines, uneven pigmentation or clogged pores may benefit most from microdermabrasion treatments. It can also improve the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, acne scarring, melasma, and other skin-related concerns and conditions.

Other benefits include:

  • Smoothness
  • Brighter complexion
  • Reduced appearance of fine lines
  • Evened out skin tone
  • Reduced appearance of dark spots
  • Cleaned-out pores

Is microdermabrasion safe?

Yes! As with all treatments that penetrate the skin or disrupt the skin’s surface, the safest procedure will be carried out by a professional. In fact, many people choose microdermabrasion over chemical peels and laser treatment because it is generally safer and less likely to cause adverse reactions.

It’s also minimally invasive as compared to chemical peels.  The skin may have some redness and swelling after a treatment, but it should subside within a few hours. Later, the skin may be flaky and dry for several days. A calming moisturizer and sunscreen should be applied after treatment. It is also recommended that you stop the use of any retinoid treatments two weeks before and after treatment.

Who shouldn’t try microdermabrasion?

  • Those using Isotretinoin (Accutane), as it could cause irritation, bleeding, and scabbing.
  • Those with moderate to severe inflammatory acne. Microdermabrasion can help mild acne breakouts, but it can make inflamed, raw skin even more so.
  • Those with rosacea.  Microdermabrasion can make the redness and puffiness of rosacea even worse.
  • Those in the midst of a cold sore breakout. Microdermabrasion around the cold sore could make the breakout worse, and it could accidentally be spread to other areas of the face.
  • Those who have a rash, wound or other skin irritation. Microdermabrasion can’t be done with eczema, psoriasis, ringworm, or any other rash.

Do I need to go to a professional?

Yes! You should always see a professional esthetician, like those at Ombu Salon + Spa, because of their extensive skincare knowledge. Also, there is always the danger of spreading bacteria into freshly abraded skin if the microdermabrasion machine is not kept clean.

The estheticians at Ombu Salon + Spa will also follow up the microdermabrasion with a facial tailored specifically to your skin’s needs. Plus, they will recommend a home treatment plan to extend the benefits of your treatment.
