Edmonds restaurateurs grin and bare it for calendar benefiting young burn victims

The calendar cover.

A group of Edmonds restaurateurs have been captured with their pants down — all for a good cause.

The 12 local men appearing on the 2020 Tasty Menu calendar represent some of downtown Edmonds’ best-known eating and drinking establishments, including Gallaghers’ Where-U-Brew, Rory’s, Scratch Distillery, Calypso, Mar-Ket, Las Brisas, The Loft, Kelnero, Epulo, Barkada, Bar Dojo and Daphne’s.

All proceeds from the calendar, which goes on sale Friday, Nov. 29, will benefit Camp Phoenix — a summer camp located in Bellingham that serves burned children 18 and younger from across the U.S. The camp is funded entirely entirely by donations, and was founded by Meadowdale High School alumnus Michael Mathis, who was burned over 64% of his body at age 11.

While all models are wearing shirts, they appear in their respective establishments modeling SAXX men’s underwear. How that came about is a story provided by Colleen Bowman, who owns — along with husband Michael — Edmonds boutique C’est la vie. The Bowmans’ store carries SAXX, and Colleen remembers seeing Michael at home one day wearing a pair of SAXX along with a sweatshirt. It sparked an idea for a calendar that would serve as a fundraiser for Camp Phoenix.

Why this particular cause? While working at a fundraising auction a few years ago, Colleen Bowman learned from a firefighter that a total of 280,000 children are burned each year in the U.S., and most of them rarely leave their homes after suffering these burns. And because the treatments for burn victims aren’t usually covered by insurance, nearly all families are forced to declare bankruptcy.

Bowman offered thanks to all those who donated time and services to make the calendar at reality: Heather Moore of Heather Moore Photography, who took the photos; Magrit Baurecht of Core Creative Team, who did the graphic design; and Lillyann Hendershot of the Branding Iron, who provided the printing. In addition, the SAAX Underwear company provided all underwear samples for the models and also donated 28 pairs for kids who will attend the Phoenix Burn Camp.

The calendar can be purchased at C’est la vie, 320 5th Ave. S., Edmonds; Scratch Distillery at 190 Sunset Ave. Ste. A, Edmonds and Gallagher’s Where-U-Brew at 180 W. Dayton St., #105, Edmonds.
