A large contingent of Edmonds School District cross country runners – including the top seven runners on the Edmonds-Woodway boys’ and girls’ teams and the Lynnwood girls team – qualified for the WIAA State Cross Country Championships on Nov. 8 after top finishes at the Northwest District meet Saturday on Whidbey Island.

Almost 400 runners competed in the 5,000 meter 3A and 2A races at the NW District Cross Country Championships at South Whidbey High School.

The E-W and Lynnwood squads punched their tickets to state with top-four placement in the district championship team rankings; the Warrior boys and girls both finished third in the team standings while the Royal girls placed fourth in their team point total.

In individual finishes, three Edmonds School District runners placed second in their respective races on Saturday. Lynnwood’s Micah Murphy finished second in the 3A boys race, Ellie Gard ran to a second place finish in the 3A girls race and Alex Williams placed second in the 2A boys race.

While the boys’ team from Lynnwood and the teams from Meadowdale and Mountlake Terrace didn’t qualify for the state meet, runners who will be going to state due to their individual finishes on Saturday include Murphy, Williams, Meadowdale’s Deklund DeBell, Meadowdale’s Sonja Amy and Mountlake Terrace’s Josh Beam.
