According to Susan Morrow, formerly with the Edmonds Seal Sitters, it’s a resting behavior often referred to as “sailing,” where the sea lion lifts its flippers and slowly floats along. “It does not indicate the animal is in peril, and on hot days is also a cooling behavior,” Morrow says.
