Reflecting on our past year, we’ve experienced some wonderful things.
- Our Hawaiian Luau was a huge success, pairing with the Parrot Heads of Puget Sound which ended up raising over $4,000 for Parkinson’s Disease.
- Local plumber Dane Berry installed a water filtration system for our brewing kettles.
- Our newest employee Gregg Stump, along with his wife Jen, moved here from Indiana. He’s an experienced homebrewer and has been inspiring us to try different yeasts, malts and water additives for improved flavor.
- We purchased a five-gallon, all-grain system, which takes our brewing to a different level. It takes a lot more work, and produces five gallons instead of the 13 1/3 batches with the original system.
- Gallaghers’ participated in the first Edmonds Oktoberfest, where revered long-time employee Chris Dufore won a Gold Medal for his Okto Beast beer in the German beer category.
- We now serve wine by the glass!
Making Wine at Gallaghers’
Our wine kits from Winexpert contain juice from vineyards worldwide: Argentina for Malbec, Piedmont region of Italy for Nebbiolo, and Australia for Chardonnay among many others. Our wines are significantly lower in sulfites than local wines, which allows the more sensitive wine drinkers to enjoy it. Each kit produces 28 bottles of wine, so bring a friend to make a batch with you so you can mix and match. Wine takes about 15 minutes to create, and six to eight weeks for fermentation. Heavier reds take six to 12 months for aging, but lighter reds and whites are ready to drink between 1 – 3 months. Our newest flavor of Sangria is Blood Orange, and along with the first one we tried Peach Raspberry, they have been hugely popular. Something fun to do with sangria is we carbonate it, and then it’s ready for bottling in beer bottles to make a wine cooler.
Making Cider
Your toughest job is to choose a flavor! Peach Mango, Spiced Apple, Pear, Pineapple to mention a few. Making the cider to your taste is important to us, so you can choose to make your batch dry, semi-sweet, or sweet.
Making Beer
We have more former home brewers converting to our system, finding it faster, more consistent, and most importantly no clean up! We can incorporate the newer cryo hops for brewing and dry hopping, as well as different water treatments for different styles of beer.
Looking Forward
Tom and I are excited about the new changes to Gallaghers’ for next year. In 2020, we’ll be installing a new bar! Jordan Ferkingstad, a local wood worker is painstakingly finishing a maple piece to extend our bar area. He and local contractor Jess LaCasse will do the installation. It’s made from a maple tree that had to be cut down at our property to make way for a septic system. We’ll be adding more taps, and will have some local brews available from breweries like Scuttlebutt. Our focus will be to get new tastes in here, especially from the breweries that now have our former employees as brewers: Farmstrong, Scuttlebutt, and most recently Bellevue Brewing.
Tom and I are having so much fun being active in the Edmonds community. We’ve nurtured a family atmosphere with root beer and games. I am continually impressed with the local service organizations as that’s always been an important part of my life. I have a difficult time choosing charities to help because I want to help them all! The Parkinson’s Foundation, Team Fox, was an easy choice as we have several dear friends who have family members affected by the disease. The Squeaky Toy is another non- profit that touched us. Dee Goertz collects new and used pet supplies, then distributes them to veterans, shut ins, and the homeless. These people care and love their pets but often cannot afford supplies and treatments. To these people, their pets are family.
We’re thankful to have a venue to host fundraising events so don’t hesitate to contact us for that if you need a place. We hope you all have a happy, healthy New Year! Cheers!
