Warriors basketball roundup: Girls fall to Lynden Christian, boys beat Juanita in non-league season openers

The Lynden Christian Lyncs girls basketball program is one of the most decorated in the state, having brought home 1A state tournament trophies 14 years in a row, including state championship titles in 2008, 2014, 2016 and 2018. On Friday, the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors got a chance to test this year’s Lyncs squad and found out first-hand just how good the program from up north is this season.

Lynden Christian blew past the Warriors 68-34 in a non-league matchup played at Edmonds-Woodway High School.

E-W, playing their first game of the 2019-2020 season, was no match for the Lyncs, scoring just four points in the first quarter, trailing at halftime 43-10 and scoring the second fewest points as a team in a game since February 2015.

No Warriors reached double figures in scoring as AJ Martineau and Brooke Kearney each tallied seven points to lead the team.

Lynden Christian’s Libby Stump scored a game high 16 points, 14 of which came in the second quarter. Teammate Riley Dykstra contributed 14 points in the win. Ten of the 12 Lyncs’ that played in the game scored.

In other E-W sports results on Friday, the Warrior boys basketball team had more fortune in their opener, earning a 53-41 victory over the Juanita Rebels in a non-league clash staged at Juanita High School.
