Prep girls basketball: Avenging an earlier loss, Warriors beat Chargers in district tourney

In a season full of ups and downs, one of the downs for the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors this year was a 40-34 loss to the sub-.500 Marysville-Getchell Chargers back on Jan. 17.

As E-W was preparing for a rematch against the Chargers, this time in a District 1 3A Girls Basketball Tournament loser-out game on Tuesday, the memory of that earlier loss was front-and-center for the Warriors — Coach Jon Rasmussen made sure of it. The 40-34 score of that Jan. 17 game was put up on the Edmonds-Woodway gymnasium scoreboard during the Warriors’ practice on Monday.

The visual reminder of that defeat seemed to be effective. “We wanted redemption from the last time we played them,” said senior forward Mia Dickenson.

The motivated Warriors left no doubt as to what the outcome of the rematch would be, soundly defeating Marysville-Getchell 59-34 in the district tourney game at Edmonds-Woodway High School.

While avenging an earlier loss can be a driving force, the biggest motivator for the Warriors on Tuesday was knowing that losing would have ended their 2019-2020 season.

“We knew we had the potential to play more games and we knew that this could potentially be our last game, but we didn’t want that to happen,” Dickenson said.

The Warriors, No. 6 seed in the district tourney, were led in Tuesday’s win by the 16 points of Jadyn Waram; AJ Martineau added 11 points. But it was the E-W defense that carried the day, holding the No. 10 seed Chargers to just 13 first-half points to take control early.

Only four Chargers scored on Tuesday, led by the 14 points of Madison Hagglund and the 10 points by Maddy Grandbois.

With the victory, E-W will continue play in the district tournament, next facing the tourney’s No. 4 seed Snohomish Panthers in a loser-out contest on Thursday, Feb. 20, at Shorewood High School. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. and will be followed by the Meadowdale-Ferndale loser-out game at approximately 7:45 p.m.
