With a Wesco League record of 9-1 going into their matchup against the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors on Tuesday, the Shorecrest Scots had been mowing down the league competition with an average winning margin of 20 points per game this season. But Tuesday’s test against the Warriors proved a little more difficult for the Scots.
E-W trailed Shorecrest by as many as 11 points in the second half, yet came back to push the game into overtime. But the Scots proved too strong in the end, fighting off the Warriors and claiming a 59-52 OT victory at Edmonds-Woodway High School.
The Warriors made things tough for the Scots during regulation, but the tide turned in the overtime period. Shorecrest scored 10 unanswered points to open overtime while the Warriors shot just 1-for-8 in the extra period.
The overtime letdown for E-W came after the team had climbed back from a 32-21 deficit with 6:19 to go in the third quarter. The Warriors even took a one-point lead, 44-43, after Mia Dickenson sunk a 3-pointer near the midpoint of the fourth quarter.
Then with the score tied 49-49, each team had a possession and chance to win the game in the final minute of regulation. But neither squad could create a good look at the basket for a potential game-winner.
Shorecrest had four players reach double figures in scoring, led by the 16 points of senior Amanda Lee. Kiana Lino scored 15 points while Lelia Hosn and Maura Weaver each contributed 10 points.
Maddie McMahon led the Warriors in scoring with 14 points, including the only E-W points in the overtime period: a 3-pointer with 12.8 seconds to play.
The Warriors shot just 25% from the free throw line on Tuesday, a big reason for the loss, Coach Jon Rasmussen said.
“Tonight our free throw shooting let us down; 4-for-12 and we usually shoot 70% from the line, so that was costly,” Rasmussen said.
But the biggest factor in the loss, Rasmussen said, was the inability to get significant playing time for starter AJ Martineau. The senior has been hampered by a high temperature the last few days and sat for most of the first half of Tuesday’s game.
“AJ, our starting point guard, has been out sick,” Rasmussen elaborated. “She came to school today but she’s sick right now. That hurts when you take your floor leader off the court.”
In addition to scoring an average of 8.5 points per game, Martineau is also E-W’s leader in assists and third in rebounding.
Despite the loss, Edmonds-Woodway is still on track for a berth in the postseason District 1 3A tournament that begins next week, a tourney that may give the Warriors another shot at the Scots, who are ranked No. 5 in the WIAA state RPI rankings. Rasmussen would welcome another chance to tangle with Shorecrest.
“I would love to play them at full health,” he said, “but no excuses, they beat us tonight.”
