Scene from my Edmonds backyard: Flying squirrel

From photographer Ken Pickle: “I have been trying to get a good shot of my Douglas Squirrel as he leaps from a nearby tree to my seed feeder. He is so quick, it’s been a challenge. He barely can fit through the openings in the wire; and is gaining weight very fast (because he  is eating so much.)

  1. Ken, I see what your doing there … fatten him up so he can’t get to the bird feeder any more! Nice action shot of a very difficult subject.

      1. The Feeder is too close to the tree. Squirrels are great jumpers. Always allow more than 7 feet. Also a plastic hood on the feeder will keep rain off the seed.

        1. My main concern was to keep the Eastern Gray’s out. I forgot how much more agile the Douglas Squirrels are. I think this guy can leap about 15 feet!
