Deborah Binder lives in Edmonds with her family. She is “dancing with N.E.D.” (no evidence of disease) after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2009. She is a foodie who loves to cook from scratch and share her experiments with her family and friends. She attended culinary school on the East Coast and freelances around town for local chefs. Her current interest in food is learning to eat for health and wellness, while at the same time enjoying the pleasures of the table. I fully sympathize with Deborah having to grow up in St. Louis. My father was transferred from Lewiston, Idaho to Sikeston, Missouri (pronounced “Misery”), located 150 miles south of St. Louis. We lived there from 1958-63.
My parents were from Iowa and thought we did not need air-conditioning in our new house. That attitude changed after the first summer and they bought two window units. Our second car had one of the original AC units, but it never got turned on in town because it lowered the gas mileage. I have no idea how my brother and I played Little League baseball in those hot and humid summers.
My father got transferred back to Lewiston in 1958. Summers in Lewiston may be even hotter than those in Sikeston, but the humidity is low and there are no tornadoes or mosquitoes. We still had to cover the car seats with wet towels. My mother once got burned when the metal latch of a seat belt accidentally touched her skin.
I have lived in two other hot spots, Sacramento, CA and Phoenix, AZ. My family and I moved to Edmonds in 1991 from the Chicago area. I love our summers where a “heat wave” is any temperature above 80* F for more than two days in succession. For that I gladly put up with the “gloom & doom” of our Puget Sound winters.

Deborah – Where did you find buckwheat flour?
Any grocery store carries buckwheat flour these days. I use Bob’s Red Mill.
Since nobody has answered this yet, I’ve bought Arrowhead at Fred Meyer. Its been awhile so can’t say for sure they carry it now but that would be the first place I would look. Some place like PCC should have it for sure. Whole Foods or Sprouts should also have it.
