Scene in Edmonds: Celebrating new leadership

Edmonds resident Tim Briggs holds a sign at the Five Corners roundabout Saturday morning celebrating the projected victory of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the next U.S. President and Vice President, eliciting honks from drivers passing by.

“Love trumps hate,” he said. “Today, America’s votes spoke…I’m overcome with emotion right now.”

  1. Thank you Tim Briggs for expressing what so many are feeling right now…Love does trump hate

    1. Thank you. I had overwhelming support from almost everybody that drove by. Only maybe 15 fingers over four hours. 🙂

  2. Yes!!! Thank you Tim Briggs! Love really does trump hate! Thank you for representing so many of us in your exuberant display of pure, delightful emotion! ❤

    1. That’s for sure. The “very stable Genius” hasn’t pardoned himself yet (which he will) but he has already declared himself the actual winner in some alternate Universe. Of course, what the Donald doesn’t understand is that accepting any Presidential Pardon is a legal admission of guilt. (The legal theory being you can’t get a pardon for something you didn’t do).

Nixon never did understand that, claiming he was innocent right up to his death. And, Trump has nowhere the great intellect that Nixon had going for himself.

The sad thing is that the pardoner, Gerald Ford, was a good President and probably deserved re-election but lost, mostly because of that ill advised pardon. He should have left Nixon dangling in the wind. Too much political party loyalty is a bad thing which I think Republicans are soon going to figure out — too late. History tells us all we need to know, but we are too married to our political tribes to learn from it.

  3. Congratulations America!! We have a real opportunity to make a substantially positive difference in our lives with a capable and competent leader.

Someone who will put this Country before himself, and put real thought, rational analysis, and honesty into their decisions.

The biggest problem for awhile now is that both sides have not been meaningfully talking with each other. In many times, decisions have been based on unquestioning dogma instead of the result of our best collaboration of our mutual ambitions for a better country. Without the ability to question our own ideas to make them better, or consider ideas on the other side, we are putting an unnecessary handicap on ourselves.

I think we should all start with the win-win ideas for both sides, and start to make a positive difference right away.

Thank you Tim. It really is something to celebrate. More people than ever before in the history of this Country made the vote to reject pointless Facism, and choose a better path for our Country and the world around us.

    1. “Reject pointless fascism” ? So are there 71 million voting Fascists in the country? Unquestioning your own dogma and considering ideas on the other side starts at home.

      1. Actually. Yes, this is what voting for him means to those who didn’t vote for him. It means supporting someone who doesn’t support equality, equity, women, minorities, immigrants or basic tenants like love and respect. It means supporting hate. This election went beyond voting for an issue or a plan.

      2. Sad to say that if you will check out the characteristics of a Fascist government you will see that was what we had, but Trump followers weren’t aware of the similarities. What you don’t know can really hurt you.

Check out your encyclopedia or any explanatory information on the Internet.

        1. Vilifying half the country is not going unify anyone. Sounds like lots of work needs to be done. It’s been 40 years since I have seen an encyclopedia.

      3. I agree. Not that many racists. Unfortunately a whole bunch of fundie Christians and racists seem to vote absolutely exactly the same. Maybe it’s time to #TaxTheChurches

  4. This period in time has truly been educational – and an opportunity for great discussions with my teenage daughters. We have talked through the hypocrisy on both sides and how the character of America is prime for restoration – and that true change…true character change starts in every home, regardless of who sits in the White House. What was truly revealing was when I was asked…”dad, had Trump won, would those same people who are dancing in the streets now be burning down the cities?” My response: “I’m sure glad no one is burning down cities at this point.” Change starts inside our homes – our children are watching – and we are setting the example.

    1. Your post: “dad, had Trump won, would those same people who are dancing in the streets now be burning down the cities?” My response: “I’m sure glad no one is burning down cities at this point.” Change starts inside our homes – our children are watching – and we are setting the example. ”

There would be chaos, cities would be burning…It truly shows the character of those people that vote based on emotions, not policy.

    2. Michael – thank you for creating relevancy with your teen children. My son and daughter were teens too at one point and I think these inquiries from our kids make us think and help guide us. Some of the questions that my kids asked and opinions they formed had to do with things like why are people so opposed to a black man as our president and why does the KKK exist, how were the nazis able to do what they did, why are kids from Edmonds easily able to engage with drugs when black kids in some places go to jail for that, why are students in schools getting shot up and why are there people protesting politics with side-arms and military style rifles, and the list goes on. I see my kids now @ 32 and 28 and it’s clear these events and stressors have formed them, not only socially and emotionally, also in their careers and missions. Like you, I’m thankful that I was able to engage with them and help promote their Socratic instincts.

  5. Thank you Tim Briggs for standing there and telling the world we have spoken, love, and peace have won.

  6. Michael,

A rhetorical question: Why would your daughters think that Biden supporters would be “burning down the cities” if Trump had won?

You’re right. True change starts in every home.

    1. Thanks Joan for agreeing that true change starts in every home. Read their question again. It was a question – not a statement or an accusation. I’m rather certain their question stems from what they saw in Seattle. It was an opportunity to share that most Americans are good – and most have character – and that there are bad apples on both sides of the political fence.

This is a time to fully understand people’s positions and questions and not jump to conclusions.

  7. Patience everyone, here’s a reminder of the legal reality we all must respect.

    In the state of Washington;
    Biden won 2,303,430 votes. 58.8%
    Trump won 1,514,563 votes. 38.7%

That’s a lot of votes on both sides so be respectful of peoples different opinions.

Today is November 8; several lawsuits are ongoing with the potential to shift the electoral college count.
On December 8: the day States are required to resolve controversies, six days before the meeting of electors.
On December 14: Electors meet in respective states to certify their votes for President and Vice President.
On January 20: In accordance with the 20th Amendment this is the day the new President begins their term.

Any comments or statements declaring the next President before December 14 are an opinion and not a fact so everyone has the legal right to agree or disagree to their hearts content, that my friends is the American way.

I for one would would love it if the final count shifts back in favor of Mr. T, after all the media noise this last weekend can you imagine? Don’t worry it’s not likely but still possible so relax and enjoy the contest.

  8. Dear Tim – You don’t know me but I want to tell you sharing your joy was a wonderful thing to see! I have worked for candidates for many years in the past so I understand how important this win was for the country and for us as individuals. So — Bravo for sharing your joy!! We need more of this in our lives! Mary (Elizabeth’s mom)

    1. Dear readers: This thread is being closed. (And I have edited myself and my snarky comment about Facebook. The election has been a bit much for me.)
      Teresa

      1. And BTW, because I forgot to add earlier, this comment thread was a mostly very thoughtful discussion with good points raised. And I appreciate all of you for making it that way.
