Scene in Edmonds: Navy ship passing through

The USS Cape St. George, a Ticonderoga class guided missile cruiser, passes by Edmonds Monday. Her home port is in Everett. (Photo by Julia Wiese)
    1. Mea culpa, you are correct. Thank you for straightening out my error. I pride myself on getting it correct the first time. 🙂

  1. Thanks for that photo & information. We enjoy watching ships going by Edmonds and use an app called Boat Watch. BUT military ships are never listed nor identifiable. So, thanks!

  2. During times of conflict US Navy ships and crew should not be identified. That is the reason that the navy removed the identifying ribbon on the old navy wool flat hats during world war ll.

    1. Bill,
Initially I sent the photo to a naval source that helps me figure out the military ships that pass through here. My source got it wrong which Russ pointed out. I then pulled up the photo and zoomed in on all identifying marks. It was originally identified as the Ross. Both the Ross and St George have the number 71 but the letters CG are on the St George. The Ross would have different letters. I also looked online to see if there was any information about that ship being in the area and there was.

    2. I also watch ships go by. I use an Android app named Marine Traffic from the play store. Position data comes from a safety system called AIS. The Navy chooses whether to turn AIS on or off. Usually large Navy ships in inland waters leave it on so the ships can be seen by other traffic…but not always. Other large ships have to have it activated while underway.

The Cape St George did show on Marine Traffic. If a large ship doesn’t show up, it’s usually possible to hear Seattle Traffic (marine) giving a warning on Marine channel 16.

      1. Ship was headed for Vigor Seattle for a complete overhaul so most of the equipment has been removed for replacement already, I was one of the tug capts. 🙂
