Thank you, such an exotic looking bird. Seems like it is tropical. We had an old stump in the back yard that attracted two such birds so I found someone to name them for me. It is a thrill to see one!
They are the largest woodpeckers in North America. I am fortunate enough to see them in my yard often. BTW, the Puget Sound Birdfest is this coming weekend. There is something for the entire family:
