Joe Scordino noted that the great blue herons are beginning to reoccupy their nests at Seattle’s Ballard Locks. No great blue heron nests have been sighted at the Edmonds Marsh this year, he added.

Yes, Joe! This is the most amazing heronry I’ve seen. Last year my birding group visited it near the end of April and there were herons busily refurbishing their nests, flying through the sky with sticks in their mouths. Some were mating. And there were actually some heron chicks as well. There’s a fabulous organization called Heron Habitat Helpers. I highly recommend anyone interested check out their website. Our group arranged for them to meet us at the heronry where they set up spotting scopes for us to take a close look at the herons and their nests. Their website says they have 70 nests this year. Their annual Heron Chick Birthday Party is usually in early June.
P.S. Hopefully nature will prevail at The Edmonds Marsh and someday a heronry will return, once this valuable habitat is conserved and restored.
Where exactly are the heron nests?
