Sidney Cohen: Known for his sense of humor, he was an active community volunteer in Edmonds

Sidney Allen Cohen
April 21, 1945 to Dec. 15, 2024

Sidney was born in Ft. Worth Texas to Anne and Louis. After graduating college, he was invited to join Officers Candidate School and later the military, bringing him to Washington where he met and married Francine, his wife of 53 years.

They had two children, Samuel and Ida. Sidney worked in the family business for over 50 years.

After retiring, Sidney and Francine resided in Edmonds for 23 years, becoming active members of the community volunteering and making many friends.

Sidney passed peacefully at home after an 18-month battle against stage 4 pancreatic cancer with his family at his side.

He was so loved by all. He had a quick wit and fantastic sense of humor. His smile, jokes, hugs, conversations and dances will be in our hearts and memories. He leaves this world a better place.

He is survived by his wife Francine, daughter Ida, son-in-law Chad, grandsons Levi and Tyce, sister Lynne, brother Michael, sister-in-law Maria, nephew Jacob, nieces Lisa Gayle, Kimberly and Tamara, sister-in-law Merle, nephew Jason and cousin Marsha and their families.

  1. Sidney was special. When I think of him I’m reminded of the apt Maya Angelou quote, “People may not remember what you said or did, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” I always felt good when with Sidney and would deliberately try to track him down because he was a delightful person to be around. He was also very generous in his gifts to the community and he had been a gift to the community himself. We cherished our times with Sidney and Fran, and Sylvana always loved his hugs.

  2. As Edmonds is “The Gem of Puget Sound” so was Sidney “The Gem of Edmonds”. Always was I refreshed in his presence. You knew what was a Sidney-kind-of-day. Generosity, wit, and his ability to pay close attention to your words and feelings were elemental in his relationships with those who knew him and will forever miss him.
As a charter member of The Nutters Club, he was our center when we met on Thursdays at The Church Key pub.
Guffaws and giggles roiled from our table and waft there to this day. His love of life, Frannie, family, and friends are his legacy and inspire us all. “Cheers!” to you my dear fellow.

  3. My wife and myself would encounter Sidney often over the many years we have lived in Edmonds. Just a quick mention that Sidney was Jewish, and as the Jews say, he was a true mensch. That is someone well-liked and admired. Someone of honor and integrity. Someone who could be counted on to help a neighbor in need. My wife and I are thankful that we were fortunate to know him.

  4. It was remarkable how often I’d run into Syd around Edmonds. It could have been at the vitamin store, downtown, at the Waterfront Center or someplace inbetween . He and Fran usually came to our office’s holiday party, and always brightened things up. He had a great dry sense of humor, and usually had something unique to say about one of the day’s events. He was a pleasure and a fine man.
