Fabrics and crafts retailer Joann in Lynnwood will be closing permanently some time after February along with an additional 20 stores in Washington state.

The company announced Sunday it would permanently close all of its 800 stores nationwide after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in less than a year last January.

Joann has not yet announced when the store in Lynnwood will be closed. However, the stores will continue to accept gift cards through Feb. 28 and no longer accept returns.

“Any dates for store closures or changes to the website and app will be communicated as soon as possible, and we expect it will take a number of weeks to complete our final sales,” Joann’s FAQ states.

An omnibus hearing on Joann’s bankruptcy will be held on March 6.

  1. Hum. Thats a shame. I used to go in there for fabric and things I need to see with my own eyes up close and personal. I guess they weren’t making any money or they wouldn’t close down or need to file bankruptcy? Ok then. I remember years ago when Edmonds had a fabric store. I think it was by Francis Anderson or part of it?? Who remembers?

    1. I remember Edmonds having more than one fabric store over the years. There was one on Main that was pretty specific to quilting fabrics . The other was in a building (which has been many different business) up Main by Frances Anderson. Sadly Joanne was a great resource for all kinds of projects and will be missed. I avoid Hobby Lobby because of their religious overtones. 70% off crucifixes in a craft store is off putting for me.

    2. Yep, then it became my favorite pet food store. Now it’s been rebuilt as the coffee/pizza/Victor Tavern/Molly Moon complex. Oh well, I still have fond memories.

  2. Super sad :(. Creativity is so important. As a high school teacher, I always go here for project supplies b/c they offer a teacher discount unlike the other creativity store across highway 99. I also prefer to use my dollars at a business that supports their employees to make their own personal healthcare choices when it comes to birth control. I’ll miss Jo Ann!

  3. There were three fabric stores in Edmonds. In 1976 a quilt shop located in a house on 5th Avenue approximately across from Il Viale coffee house. It closed and Calico Basket opened on the corner of Main and 6th Avenue, where The Commons is now located. It was there for a good 20 years. It sold and then became a pet supply store.
In the 1980’s there was a fabric store located in the middle of the west side of the street between 5th and Dayton. It was only there for about 5 years and sold beautiful fashion fabrics. First class store. I spent a bit of money there feeding my sewing needs.
Still sewing and wanting quality fabrics/trims and now relegated to online, UGH!

  4. Thanks for all those memories and info. I think we need a nice fabric/craft store in Edmonds. Sure, sounds like it would have business from all of these commenters. If we want to keep our tax dollars local that’s the way to do it.
